Cakes,Cakes,& More Cakes!

Well, It has been sometime since I have updated my blog with pictures and stories of cakes I have done. Today,however won't be a day for me to go into the background/story behind each cake. But I did want to get pictures posted so you wouldn't think I have totally lost it. LOL These cakes are ones I have done from April 2011-October 2011.

 ** I do have a story behind the cake above - I will post the "mishap" soon**

Bumble Bee Transformer Cake

This week I have been working on a Bumble Bee Transformer Cake.

I am using this particular picture to go by.
The one above is with buttercream and fondant. The cake I am doing is being done with ALL buttercream.

Here are a few pictures in " The making of Bumble Bee " lol
Let me start off by saying .... It took ALOT of buttercream to ice these cakes !!
I think I ended up making 6 batches!!!!! Not sure but I think I have a buttercream fairy that sneaks in at night and eats the buttercream to where I have to make more LOL

 So not pretty but the top is going to have white buttercream on it

 See ?? Still not pretty but I have to smooth it out

 I have added the stripes and the number 3 on the tiers and also the border for the top tier
Added the logo on the top tier as well

~~~~~And the finished cake~~~~~
The customer has the topper for the cake :)
Pink and Green Monogram Cake
This cake was a last minute order... I wasn't really sure what design I was gonna do. The customer ordered a cake from me last year with the pink and green,zebra and monogram. She wanted to stick with the pink and green for this cake. It is due tomorrow so I only had today to work on it! Talk about rushing LOL I had fun making this cake though - I think it turned out really nice :)
I only had 1 mishap with this cake LOL I put my dowel supports in and placed the top tier on - a few minutes later I can see the cake sinking on one side! YIKES! I had to take the top tier off and redo my supports - I measured but apparently between putting them in and sitting the cake on top they decided to "Shrink" LOL But I fixed it :-D
Cake layers below before icing them
 My camera died so I had to put it on charge so I wasn't able to get any more pics of the "process" but here is the finished cake :)
Optimus Prime/Bumble Bee Transformer Cake
I made this cake for a little boy turning 6 who loves Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee Transformers. I was given 2 pictures and from the 2 I created this cake.
It is a chocolate cake with marshmallow fondant and marshmallow fondant accents. The transformers are toys so he can play with them afterwards.
Cake Baking - Flower Nail Method!!!
So, as I am sitting here browsing for new techniques to try and new things, I came across this method! I know that I sometimes have that dreaded "dome" on top of my cakes and I have to either cut it off or flatten it. This flower nail method seems like it would be worth trying :)
Just a quick demo to show what the flower nail method looks like. This method is an alternative to using “bake even strips” for a cake that requires less to no leveling after baking.
Hope this is helpful.
1. Spray flower nail with non-stick spray
2. Place nail in the center of pan, touching the  bottom. Bake as usual
3.  Remove from oven. Cover top with cake board or sheet pan and flip entire cake pan over
4. after flipping over the cake pan, nail pops out making it easy to remove.
April Birthday Cake for Victory Baptist Church
Here is the April Birthday Cake for Victory Baptist Church that I made for our Birthday Breakfast.
It isn't exactly the way I wanted it to turn out but it's what came about. I was under some good pain meds since I just had the IVC Filter put in on Thursday and I did this on Friday.
It is a vanilla keylime with all buttercream icing and piped detail. Basketweave on the bottom
~ Princess Abby ~
Awhile back I got an order for this cake. It was either do a princess theme or a horse theme. The little girls favorite colors are Purple and Turquoise. So I pondered on it for a while, had several different ideas for both. But I kept leaning towards the princess theme. This littler girl's name is Abby and she is turning 8 years old!
I am pleased with the way this cake turned out however, I did have some " moments" while working on this cake~ haha let me share!
Grab ya something to drink and get comfy - I wish now I would have taken pictures but I was so frustrated.
** not to mention sick **
I started out doing what I normally do - make my cake batter, bake my layers, freeze them. Then I start working on the buttercream or fondant and in this case, buttercream. I gather all my ingredients and start the process of making the buttercream. I creamed the butter and the shortening and I start to add the powdered sugar.... now all goes well til I FORGET that my measuring cup is in the bag with the sugar and I go to pour in the last little bit from the bag.... can ya guess what happens ? YEP~ Right into the mixing bowl it went with the paddle going - I go to stop the machine and it's not locked down so it tilts upwards ** Paddle still moving** and buttercream goes EVERYWHERE!
Are you picturing this ?
I finally get it to stop and I just stand there - really wantin to cry or scream - But I just stand there for a moment and take in the complete mess I have just made!
Did ya think that was it ?
It gets better!!
I get all that cleaned up and I am back on track. Now, it is time to color my buttercream the turquoise color. I gather up my green and my blue icing color and I start to mix the 2 colors. I add a little green and then a little blue. I mix a little and go back to grab the blue and guess what I did - can ya guess ? do ya know ? I DROPPED the blue and it splatters all over me, my clothes, it drops to the floor - I just shake my head and stand there for a moment thinking to myself " I need to go back to bed"  - Not an option - Gotta get this cake done! So, I clean up that MESS and start again!
Finally, I have this the right color I want!
I can actually start crumb coating and icing these layers! I get them iced and let them sit to crust a little bit so I can use my paper towel to smooth it all out ....
Go to get my viva paper towels and guess what ????????
The funny thing is - I had just gone to Walmart a few hours before and could have PICKED UP SOME!!!!!
Now mind you - I am sure there are other ways to get the buttercream smooth but I have always USED VIVA Paper Towels!
So I sit, and ponder, I can use regular paper towels but it will leave a small impression of the design from it on the icing . OK - I will try it - it's a swirl pattern so it might look alright! LOL What do you do when you are left with no other options cept to get dressed again and go 15 miles back to town  - I wasn't doin that so the swirly design was just going to have to work LOL
I must say it turned out rather nice but so not what I wanted LOL
With all the mishaps that happened while doing this cake - it has taught me a few lessons.
1. Make sure you have every little thing you need before starting a cake!
2. Don't do a cake when you have a sinus infection,bronchitis,and an ear infection at the same time!
** Yes I wore gloves and a mask while doing this cake **
3. There is no crying in cake!! LOL Gotta laugh and go with the flow and everything will turn out just fine :)
Now here is the cake!
It is a chocolate cake with all buttercream icing. It has 4 edible images of the disney princesses, play gem rings, play wands and real little play princess dolls. I used the disney princess candles.
After I finished this cake I thought - ok I don't have Happy Birthday on this cake and I think now would be a good time to use my handy dandy new cricut cake machine!
So, I rolled out some gumpaste on the mat and cut out Happy Birthday Abby to add to the cake :)
Not to bad for my first try!
~ A few more Christmas Cakes ~
I set out to make a few cakes this morning with not one single person in mind to give them too. I wasn't even sure HOW I was going to decorate them. Just felt the need to make 3 cakes :) So, as if I had nothing else to do I made the cake batter **White Vanilla** and I had some icing I needed to use. I was given the Santa Claus in the Chimney pan a while back so I thought, Hey this would be a great time to try it out! It's suppose to be a 3D Stand up Santa but I decided to just lay him down :)
So here is the first one - The Santa in the Chimney
All Buttercream!
** I ended up giving this one to one of my neighbors**
My next cake is a 8 inch White Vanilla and I had lots of red and green buttercream left over so I decided to do the poinsettia's again and added a few sprigs of holly and berries. I think they are so pretty and festive :)
Letters are red marshmallow fondant
** Might keep this one for us to eat**
My last cake I did today was also a white vanilla covered with red marshmallow fondant with green fondant trees and stockings. White Buttercream detail and snowflake.
** I think I am going to take this one to my sister**
~Wedding Cake~
I was asked to do a almost last minute wedding cake.
They wanted Red fondant and White roses so this is what I came up with..
Let me just say ~ Fondant is a PITA to turn red!!!
But I think it turned out nice and I really hope they like it :)
~Christmas Wreath Cake~
This is a keylime cake with buttercream icing covering the cake. Real ribbon for the border around the bottom.
The design of the cake was left up to me so I decided to do a Christmas Wreath with holly and berries.
This was a simple yet fun, festive cake to do :)
This cake was done spur of the moment.
I had leftover cake batter from a keylime cake I am doing and will post pictures of it tomorrow. So I decided with this one, I would make little snowmen all around it.
Was fun :)
"Boob Cake"
This is going to be interesting for sure!
A couple of weeks ago I got an order for a cake - they were not sure what kind of cake to actually get. A friend of mines boyfriends birthday is this Thurs. We went back and forth on several different kind of cake ideas and she wanted to do something along the lines of a Gag Cake so he is going to get a boob cake LOL
This is my first time ever making this type of cake LOL I have seen them before though.
I am going to try to get a picture for each step I do.
 This was a half sheet cake that I carved out for the body. The Boobs were done using a soup bowl
Flesh Colored Tinted Buttercream covering the cake.
Fondant Covered
Added edible pearls
And for the FINISHED PICTURE!!!!!!
The Birthday Boy LOVED his cake!!!
Check out the pics!
